Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s director says “work has finally come to an end” on the Switch fighting game now that the Sora amiibo is here.
After praising the people involved in the amiibo’s development, Sakurai writes (machine translated): “All the fighters have been converted into amiibo, and the ‘Super Smash Bros Ultimate’ work has finally come to an end” - breaking the hearts of fans everywhere.
The main concern with Sakurai’s comment is that this marks the end of the Super Smash Bros, or at least his work on the series. Shortly after Sora’s reveal, the developer saidhe doesn’t count on there being another gameand thathe’s working on something newbut it might have “nothing to do with game production.”
It’s important to remember that the Super Smash Bros games are not only a staple to Nintendo consoles but also have large gaps in between their releases. Basically, it’s best to take Sakurai’s comments with a grain of salt and keep our fingers crossed that we’ll one day get a new Smash Bros game, perhaps for the mysteriousNintendo Switch 2.

After studying Film Studies and Creative Writing at university, I was lucky enough to land a job as an intern at Player Two PR where I helped to release a number of indie titles. I then got even luckier when I became a Trainee News Writer at GamesRadar+ before being promoted to a fully-fledged News Writer after a year and a half of training. My expertise lies in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, cozy indies, and The Last of Us, but especially in the Kingdom Hearts series. I’m also known to write about the odd Korean drama for the Entertainment team every now and then.
